normal for a dog's penis to smell and taste coppery/irony?

Is it normal for a dog's penis to smell and taste very coppery/irony? I only have experience with a neutered male a while back and there was almost no smell or taste. Now I have my dog and he is intact so I'm curious if it is different. He is a 1.5 year old 125lb St. Bernard mix. Almost as soon as he was out of his sheath the smell hit me. I stopped shortly after that, but mostly because he just didn't seem interested yet. I'm probably going to wait a few months before I try again as I don't think he is ready yet and I want it to be on his terms. I thought he had an infection a couple of months back as his pee smelled so bad you could smell it from like 10 feet away but the vet said he was fine. Could he just be a smelly dog or should I have him looked at again?

Veterinarian here.

Yes it can be normal for a male dog's extruded penis to smell somewhat metallic and/or coppery. The odour may get less pungent as he gets a older.
It should not smell like rotting meat or something has seemingly died in there. He would need a check up if he does.

You might find yourself getting used to it after a while and actually crave his scent! Or like me, a massive turn-on when I get a whiff of it ?

Yeahh you'll get used to- and ultimately enjoy -the way that it tastes like a zinc supplement. ? I like your attitude toward your dog, by the way. Y'all two are going to have a good and healthy relationship.

Sidenote, I'm really happy to see that we have multiple veterinarians around. Props to y'all, @1000extra @Deagle113
