normal for a dog's penis to smell and taste coppery/irony?

Is it normal for a dog's penis to smell and taste very coppery/irony? I only have experience with a neutered male a while back and there was almost no smell or taste. Now I have my dog and he is intact so I'm curious if it is different. He is a 1.5 year old 125lb St. Bernard mix. Almost as soon as he was out of his sheath the smell hit me. I stopped shortly after that, but mostly because he just didn't seem interested yet. I'm probably going to wait a few months before I try again as I don't think he is ready yet and I want it to be on his terms. I thought he had an infection a couple of months back as his pee smelled so bad you could smell it from like 10 feet away but the vet said he was fine. Could he just be a smelly dog or should I have him looked at again?

Vet here. You betcha. Totally normal for some doggos. Sometimes it goes away when they get older, sometimes it’s a part of life.
His own terms are always the best terms to continue on.

Once you do, If you are anything like me, it may even put you in the mood to smell it ;)
