You have to take into consideration that this mostly happened a very long time ago. It was a different time, most people let their dogs roam freely. At least, "out in the country" where I lived. Also, most male doggos were not neutered.

Basically, neighbor dogs would come to visit and play with my dog(s) and I would invite them in for a romp. Maybe they could somehow tell their friends that I was willing to provide certain services. I had some "frequent fliers" who would appear at my door several times a month. I suppose I could be accused of taking advantage of them, or they might have been taking advantage of me, who knows?
