Yeah my pony knew something was very wrong the day my doggy passed away, literally wouldn't let me pass her in the physically blocked me with herself until I broke down crying into her mane, hell even she was upset by the lost of her non equine friend.
I lived for awhile not knowing if a long term friend was going to take his own life. I didn't know if he would even be alive the next day or not. That was a living hell. But my newfie knew something wasn't right, and kept herself as close to me as possible. She even was extra snuggly, and for her, she's not naturally a snuggler. But she just... knew.

What happened to your friend?
Same thing that happens to all zoos. His animal love partner, a female canine, passed away suddenly and nearly without warning. He struggled, and still struggles, to live life without her. She was his world, but once she left, she took most of that world with her. Something he struggles and struggled to adapt to.

Most deaths seem to come as a surprise.
I had a close relative that was happy and healthy, but after a series of medical events, died within 2 weeks. Sometimes it's sudden and unexpected, sometimes it's slow and painful. Such as someone getting dementia and getting progressively worse and worse over the course of many years until the body shuts down. We're nothing more than a collection of cells that make up a body. Every 9-10 year every single cell in your body is replaced, and the you that made up you is no longer the you 10 years ago. Humans get about 7-10 overall replacement cells (some cells are replaced faster than others), but each time the cells become more and more corrupted, malformed, and disfigured. It's why it's important to make the most of the time you have, because you never know when it might end.
