she did read it. My guess is similar to your second idea, that she mixed utopia and dystopia and that she didn't want to admit it afterwards. But she does like control a lot, too, so she probably still liked some aspects of it.
The other officer's still adamant about Brave New World being an Utopia, though, and he knows what utopia means and he's serious. He thinks the way they govern is desirable.
Besides that, both of them are really nice people, though.
