There's a place in Tennessee I think (maybe Kentucky), in the middle of the appalachians, where one of the major north-south interstates makes this bizarre 360 loop. It's because the new deal crews building the interstate simultaneously from the north and south didn't line up when they came together, so instead of recutting the mountain and repaving a section from either end they built an elevated 360 "ramp" to make up the difference in alignment.
