math questions?

if you want to make this a math oriented thread feel free but...

im gonna ask this question.

do 2 percents 'add' together or is it multiplicative to create a similar smaller number together? for example 12% 'base' (think max hp damage for gameplay clarity purposes of this explaination) of something with 120 (as base damage) attached to it as a secondary number and 25% gets added into the mix on both 'numbers'. does that increase the 12% by 25 into 37 while the 'base' number is like (oh i don't know)... 37% max hp damage together with the base damage involved. 120 plus 37% equals= 164. (yes i used a calculator for this part but i can show my work of every 100 is the percent number added in) like 100 of 37% is 137. but the 20 of 37% is something of an unknown to me since it comes into a decimal thing one can't do by hand.

so the question about percentages is do percents add together like this or is it multiplied together by decimals to equal a smaller number to pair with it?

and yes im aware im not the brightest cookie in the cookie jar.

1*1=2 (some people will know :D )

so the question about percentages is do percents add together like this or is it multiplied together by decimals to equal a smaller number to pair with it?
If you are asking about a game mechanic, then it can be entirely directed by the logic of the game. For example the game might decide that only the higher number applies and disregard anything else.

Are you talking additive like get 25% off and another 10% off on top? That’d be (price * (1-0.25) * (1-0.1))

Or are you talking 1/2 of 1/2? 1/2 of 1/2 is 1/4 where you multiple the numerators and denominators.

lets go with league of legends for the sake of league. if garen uses his ult.. with spear of shojin. does spear of shojin (currently max damage is % missing hp damage

150 / 250 / 350 (+ 25 / 30 / 35% of target's missing health)

yes this.... spear of shojin works like For each stack, your damaging abilities deal 3% increased damage, up to a maximum of 12% increased damage at 4 stacks (copy and paste)

reading this part in this manner. does that mean the 12% turns the missing hp damage into a 47 percent by adding these 2 together? or does it equal a smaller number (hence the multiply thing that adds in the smaller number with the bigger)

im sure for the sake of 'scaling' it doesn't play off the 'stronger slow wins' rule.

to further amplify this head work. i know death cap gives 30% amplification on total AP... which is basically every 100 ap is 30 plus... yes. but does that also mean (in theory) all other ap scaling abilities are also increased by 30% (by proxy not directly) due to this amplification?

Depends cometly on the game, and how it's coded.

For example in path of exile, there is x% increased, and x% more.

X%increased stacks additive with other sources of increased, while x%more stacks multiplicative with other sources of more.

100 base damage

50% increased damage
25% increased damage
15% increased damage

50%more damage
30%more damage
10%more damage

The increased damage gets additive together, so
50%+25%+15%=90%
100 base damage x 1,9 =190 damage.

The more damage is multiplicative
So:

50%more: 190x1,5= 285
30%more: 285x1,3= 370,5
10%more: 370,5x1,1= 407,55

In dota 2 for example, most things make no sense, some % increases only your base damage, ignoring any flat damage, some is multiplicative with one thing, but does not stack with another. Some slows stack, some only use the strongest source, because one is a buff, the other one a debuff, and anything is a mess anyway.

Tldr : look up the wiki on any specific game thing you whant to know, because some games are consistent, others are not.

yeah because Riot allowed true damage to be amplified by percents too. so im curious if scalings literally functioned this way (by proxy) or is it independent flat numbers. if that makes sense. and yeah wiki is the way to go on certain topics on their math logics.
