What’s it about?Being and Time by Martin Heidegger
It's a book on the ontology of being, basically it explores some of the central themes of metaphysicsWhat’s it about?
That sounds very interesting! How are you enjoying it so far? It's a book on the ontology of being, basically it explores some of the central themes of metaphysics
Do you have any advice for continuing on that sort of mileage? I am trying to challenge myself to read 50 books this year, but as time goes on I find myself reading less and lessAfter realizing I have so many ebooks that it'll take me 30+ years to get through them all (and I'm 40), I set myself the goal of reading a lot more this year, and so far been achieving it. Been reading 1 to 2 novels a week for the past 4 months.
On Saturday I finished reading Probe, a Star Trek TOS novel that follows up Star Trek IV. This evening I finished reading Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers, the first of 4 Red Dwarf novels. Before I turn out the lights in bed tonight I'll start reading Better Than Life, the 2nd Red Dwarf novel.
I’d imagine it would be boring, just a lot of whining lol! I’ve heard it’s interesting more so in the psychology aspect.Mein Kampf. But it is so bloody bofing I fall asleep after each page so it takes me a lifetime to finish.![]()
The truth that as a Buddhist I hate violence and cry often when I heard about the shit happening in the world (Uvalde, Taxes for an example).I’d imagine it would be boring, just a lot of whining lol! I’ve heard it’s interesting more so in the psychology aspect.
I could get that too. Last book I read that was all philosophy was The Dead City. It’s really good but that much philosophy sometimes makes it so hard to get through!
Hey I get that. Violence is rough and children being involved is never ok.The truth that as a Buddhist I hate violence and cry often when I heard about the shit happening in the world (Uvalde, Taxes for an example).
I want to say there is literature on how he captured the hearts and minds of the German people. It is interesting. But you nailed it for me. As interesting as all of it is, doesn’t mean that the things he did are simply ok, he was a monster. But what I write now many might disagree is that the fact intrigues and fascinates me how one single man cound rally almost whole country behind him as Hitler did. He was a very bad person but still I try to dig and dwell deeper into his head that how it is possible to majority just to accept him and what he did.
That actually sounds really cool! I might have to peep it!Speaking of war times I highly recommebd everyone to read the books by Sven Hassel (remember to read them in order from 1 to 14).
It portrays a life of a soldier who hates and denies nazi party but only tries to survive and the best way to do that is to shit the hell up and follow the orders.
It’s about an experiment. People from different times are picked out by aliens from the 30s to the 70s. They are all told they are performing in this experiment (a metaphor for communism, the authors were apart of the Soviet Union but became dissolutioned with it) but no one knows what it is. There are communists, and fascists, and just “regular” people all thrown in together and it gets pretty twisted and interesting. however, the characters all get into debates about politics and ideology, and it’ll be long periods of just debating it in the book so it can be hard to get through at times, especially if you aren’t super into philosophy talks.Tell me about the Dead City. The name catchef my eye.
Metro is amazing. It’s story is actually more interesting than the games (even though they are both kinds written by the author, he co-wrote the story for the games). The first book is really interesting. Metro 2034 it’s more of a character study, it’s a slow burn but adds a TON to the lore and atmosphere, metro 2035 is controversial in the fandom because it is likes it’s predecessor, and is more of a character study. Many people don’t like it, but I find that book to be the best in the series.Oh and I love Metro 2033. Games are so good and I also have the book. Maybe I should start to read it.
I'm still reading through the introduction. Heidegger's writing is pretty opaque from what I've gleaned, so I find it as a way to challenge myself. That sounds very interesting! How are you enjoying it so far?
It is. It made me a better person. Journey of Souls are about people and their journeys through life and beyond. That does sound very interesting! Kinda like a spiritual journey!
No I gotcha! I just meant reading that book is probably a spiritual journey and I could understand how it would change your life!
I might seriously have to check it out for that!Have fun exploring if you decide so. And it helped me to be a better person who do not fear of my flaws anymore. I learned to accept myself. Hehe.
Thank you. Please doI might seriously have to check it out for that!
How is it? Anything interesting?I am currently reading the latest edition of national geographic magazine.
Not really. Other than maybe set micro goals, each book you start say "I'd like to be done with this one by ..." For 50 a year that means one a week with 2 weeks to spare. It may be easier to set the time per book than to think of the big picture of how many left you have, or how many behind you are.Do you have any advice for continuing on that sort of mileage? Oh wow! Those are all really good tips! I think I’ll have to try that out!N

Also give yoruself the times. I read usually half hour ir so every night in bed before turning off the light on my nightstand. Depending how fast you read and the length of the book that alone may cover most of the book in a week. I personally read 20-30 epages in half an hour, so it'd take 10 days with just that time to get through a 300 epage book. I have then also on many half of weeknight spend an hour or so on the couch reading in the evening, 15-20 minutes on lunch break at work, but I'll spend a couple hours throughout the day on sat/sun.
I did the same micro goals trying to burn through my manga backlog before I refocused to all the novels, and found that by setting the "I want to be done by" that I was getting through it even faster than my goal. Before I started setting those goals I'd usually read half a volumn a day, but I realized it'd take me 4 years to get through my backlog at that rate so started setting the "goal" of 1 volumn per day which then changed to 2. So I'd start a 60 volumn series say "I want to be done by this time next month" and I'd end up doing closer to average 3 per day and finish in just 3 weeks.
