Cut them every day by a sliver, like, the thickness of three sheets of paper stacked on each other. Veeeery tiny slivers. The blood vessel inside will slowly shrink if you do this meticulously every day.
I had a black dog with that kind of nails. Let them grow one week and WHOOP! They were too long already! And I could NOT see the vein inside the vantablack nails :gsd_shocked:! So I just snipped them the tiniest bit every day and kept at it.

Have you ever tried to give a cat a bath with one arm? Ya. It turns into a wrestling match. I do file them down if he’s just laying down and in deep sleep

Is he a cat of a dog???
I socialized my dogs to let me clip their nails. When they were wee puppies, I held them on my lap and fiddled with their paws every day, then I held them and touched their paws with the clippers and finally clipped them. Some were really REALLY squirmy and non-cooperative but it's not like it's their choice, the nails gotta get clipped for their own good, so it was "we either clip the nails or cry and clip the nails!" with treats and positive reinforcement it got better as they grew up and mellowed down.
Clipping nails being hard is not a good reason to not do it.

Filing them down is ingenious though. With the animal sleeping, it's a breeze ;D Keep at it, man. Nails too long are gonna be a problem. I've seen many dogs who got their nails just slip off the inner vein for being too long, and seeing that certainly has made me take this kinda thing seriously.

I have been doing well with it for the most part.
last trip to the vet he got them done. The tec cut too short and trust isn’t easy to regain after a painful experience
 
Oof :/// must be real hard nails to trim if a vet tech fails, too.

But yeah, sorry for rambling, I just want to put this info out there so everyone will have better luck at trimming nails. Your technique is good, too!
