In a private dialog with someone a question came to mind that I'm interested in how other equine zoo 'owners' feel. Let's not turn this into a heated debate or flame war it's intended to be food for thought and an opportunity for others to share their opinions, so let's keep it civil please.
One option for someone who's exploring whether their heart, love and soul rests with equines is to lease one taking full responsibility for said equines care and upkeep. Lease terms can vary tremendously but in some (many) instances, especially with a breeding lease, the mare (or stallion) is housed on the lessee's property. In others their full care is paid for at a commercial stable (not the best place to explore an intimate relationship though). One of the issues with fence hopping is that a fence hopper doesn't have to take accountability or responsibility for said equine should complications happen as a result of (an) intimate encounter(s). Of course there's the issue with 'property rights' although I don't regard any living being as property regardless of societies viewpoint on such even if I have to acknowledge it.
For example in any lease (especially a breeding lease or one where the equine could be fatally injured or die) the lease should specify clearly who is responsible for the financial (not to mention emotional) loss. I would never lease any of my beloveds for breeding or any endeavor (like competition where a fatal injury could occur) that might place them at risk. I'd also not lease them to anyone that I did not know extremely well. It should be noted that most mundanes regard equines more as property than a companion and partner. Under it all the issue is trust yet sadly too many humans are simply not trustworthy IMO.
I know a few equine zoo friends that have leased mares and explored an intimate relationship up to and including purchasing the mare later. Thanks for your comments and opinions.
