I learned to read at quite a late age, and my mum struggled a lot to teach me as homework, etc. She would get really annoyed if I couldn't put a word together and sound it out.
So my uncle stepped in and helped, and he gave me his copy of War of the Worlds, a tatty Puffin Books copy from the 60's. We read the entire thing together, and despite it being pretty advanced for someone who had previously struggled to read I picked it up fairly quickly and absolutely fell in love. I still love it.
And thus began my life long obsession with science fiction and older men.
My favorite books for enjoyment are the LOTR series by J.R.R. Tolkien.
My favorite nonfiction is A People's History of the United States from 1492 to Present by Howard Zinn. I can't say I enjoyed the read but the information is transformative.
