Why get a dog neutered?

honestly I think a lot of cat owners neuter because they refuse to keep their cat indoors. I think there’s a good case for spaying a female cat that doesn’t tolerate heat cycles well indoors

But most people I’ve met who say they had their cat neutered or spayed did it because they wanted to have an outdoor cat that they barely took care of with no risk of pregnancy. Horrific behaviour imho. If you can’t provide a cat with a safe home and enough enrichment that they don’t have to live in dangerous city environments (cars, urban predators) or outdoors in rural spaces where larger predators are a major concern—don’t get a cat. An outdoor cat has an average lifetime anywhere from 2-10 times shorter than an indoor cat in North America. Can’t imagine letting an animal I love get eaten by bears, eagles, etc or hit by a Canadian driver with a car so big they can’t see a middle-schooler let alone a tiny cat crossing the road (famously shit drivers out here).
I think that applies to people who pay for pets.

It certainly doesn't apply to folks who just happen to be feeding a feral animal. It isn't theirs, they didn't choose it. If they catch it, give it shots and neuter it, isn't that a case where neutering would be good?

Short answer: People will not take care of their pet's behavior all the time plus they don't want their pets to procreate and take care of their offspring

Well, here in Germany, there are not outdoor predators other than humans.
It is totaly normal for cats to roam free here.
Also it is cruel to confine the space cats roam, die to their territory in nature beeing extreme large for their size. You won't have a home large enough to fulfill that.

In city's, I understand why cats are held indoors, but than my suggestion would be to not get a cat.

My father had 7 cats in his life so far. One died with 18 years after reoccurring cancer, one with 21 on multible organ failure du to age, one was something between 23 and 25 also old age. One got stolen right in front of his wives eyes, and she was not fast enough whipping out a phone and make a photo of the car. Romanian car plate. The other 3 are still there, one is a stray they took in, one is a 15 year old they got from a friend who could not take car of them anymore, and one is a 3 year old, the brother of the stolen one.

So just because in your fucked up country you can't manage to keep alive your pets, does not mean it's the same in other fucked up countries.

... However, in reality you should only neuter your dog if he develops health conditions that would require neutering to treat
That's what happened to my ol' Golden about a year ago. One of his 2 best friends started swelling and after the vet looked at him they said it was time for them to go. No idea if he still gets horny or not though. I haven't asked.

(A) I have lived in Germany—near the Black Forest. There are absolutely predators other than humans.

(B) so much of what you just said about cats is factually false. Not only are modern domestic cats perfectly happy in a house when they are given adequate enrichment (they really do not need more territory than 300m squared), they are also invasive predators in their own right. Yes, even in Europe. Outdoor cats kill over 2 billion songbirds worldwide every year.

If you’re going to let your cat free roam, you clearly don’t care about local environments or biodiversity—that’s animal cruelty

Also? Free roaming cats are likely to spread feline leukaemia and FIV. Just because you happen to have free roaming cats that have beaten the survival odds compared to others doesn’t mean that everyone does.

If you are not prepared to give a domesticated animals a rich life indoors you aren’t capable of caring for a domesticated animal, period.

Years ago there was a saying in my county....... "The only good cat is the one thats under my tyres". I fully agree with this saying as its NOT just about cats breeding. Its about the wild life that they kill and destroy. Shoot the cute bastards (cats) I say. If it cant be looked after and secured properly then it shouldnt be owned by that person. World wide the governments should have inspectors going around without any notice given to houses to see if the cats are home and cared for or roaming the suburbs. There should be heafty fines for the owners if they dont comply. Also all cat owners should be forced to be on a registrar with their quantity and breeds of cats with photos. All cats should have trackers under the skin which can be traced by government departments so an owner can easily be held accountable.
So if your dog runs away it should be shoot ?
Or is it just your hatred for cats specifically ?

Dogs exist in all forms and sizes.
So why choose a big, strong race, and the first thing you do is castrate him/her ? When you could choose a more calm race.

Story time: my neighbour has a pretty energetic male dog, vet told him to neuter him so he would be calmer.
He tried the chemical castration with a 6 months chip.

Worst 6 months of his life.

The dog was miserable, lost interest in activities focused with his owner and got distracted easily. He was insecure, jittery and quickly stressed. Other dogs started to dominate him immediately because he didn't smell like a male dog any more and this enhanced his insecurity (and even female dogs didn't react correct with him)
It was strange, seeing sogs react to him as if he was a 'freak'

Jump forward 10 months. He finally starts to recover. His agility is back, though he has some joint problems because he also put on a little weight in the time.

Concentration got WAY better and he has started training again.

His sexdrive also returned and this especially is a wonderfull way for him to vent his frustration into productivity. When ever there is a hard training day, he has a tough situation with another dog or he dimly is stressed from the day, he rewards himself with a good pounding and one can practically see the stress melting away from him.

Never heard no more talks of any form of castrating him for heavens sake.

Cats are actually..... Cats play and torture small animals till they die.............care of their cats. If people with cats .... cats to stray in the wide open world. So as much as everyone can judge me for my comments I think irresponsible owners are way worse than my comments. How many ....... cats on the road. The only person to blame for this is the irresponsible owner and NOT the person driving the car.
We were talking about neutering dogs here, if you don't mind.

To me, neutering sounds like a terrible loss. What do you think about vasectomy for dogs ?
(if you wanna run the same topic for horses, I am on...)

For most people, it's the right choice. More docile, less roaming, less marking territory, less fights, less offspring.

GO ahead and suggest a dog breed that would be best....just try. Plus that doesn't account for people wanting a certain breed or look or reputation. My only real regret is that we can't spay and neuter people. Far too many useless idiots procreating, and think of them being more docile...send them to the factories to build things the rest of us good people....less crime...ah crap...I think I just went Nazi.

Mainly because of bad owners that let there dogs roam around the south side of town and breed with any other dog to the point there's thousands of half feral strays attacking kids and pets. At that point it becomes a public health and safety issue. If everyone was a responsible pet owner , it wouldn't be such a big factor anymore.

Telling people to get their pets fixed is a cheaper alternative to trying to provide for thousands of homeless pets over time.
Do you have any evidence it is mostly the owned dogs that procreate around the town?
And that it is those dogs who attacks pets and children ?
My guess is that the main part of the stray dogs is breed by other strays. So to castrate the owned dogs really makes no difference in the number of strays.

Surely not all vets will always take advantage. You wouldn't, right @Deagle113 ?

Depending on where you live, this is a social/cultural phenomenon vs a biological or health related one. TPR is pushed in the United States where I practice as a be all and end all solution to everything, from health concerns to overpopulation. This is simply not true, but nuance and grey areas are difficult to create campaigns around.

So many people are talking about their neutered dogs and getting their dogs neutered, I'm curious to know why you would want to get a dog neutered?
animals can be neutered for many reasons, i for one have to get my white gsd neutered due to his one undescended testicle and couldnt careless if he lost his horny side. at the end of the day medical wise its safer to have it done rather then risk the hidden nut becoming cancerous which could result into further problems

Yes, that's true. There are always exceptions though. Sad thing is the majority are that way.
Agreed. I am currently looking for a new vet because the last one I went to said my boy would need to be neutered if he ever nips his dick while grooming himself again. Like, how the fuck is neutering him going to prevent him from licking himself. It was an accident and a one time ordeal. Jumping to surgery is ridiculous 🙄

cats undertandable if it effects hygiene in the house.

No balls though = no cum 😭
But also evevn though it may be hard to tell. Test is still a harmone. Its shoudk be given ti humans at a certain age. It would stop so many health problems.
So if it does for humans. Be only the same for the k9 crew. Isnt like they can get bloods done in case another harmones not balenced and all youd see if just random helath issues that get symptoms treat. Bit sad realy the lack of understanding behind it. Unless theres some serious aggression or behaviour issues that cant be trained out.
