Stallion hygiene

I volunteer at a ranch and we have a stallion that is around 2 years old and his penis is kinda dirty but I don't want to ask ranch owner about this because it's an awkward question. I just want to know if it can cause some problems or no and I know I could have just googled this but I would like to ask somebody here that owns horses and knows more about this topic.

Cleaning a male equine's equipment is a normal part of owning either a stallion or gelding, stallions normally have less of a issue with it than geldings but any responsible ranch owner should be well aware of their needs.
