Smaller k9 partner?

My dogs are pretty big. I like em big But a zooey friend of mine has an interest in a medium sized male dog, and I can see the benefits of that; less to feed, less space they take up, etc. Does anyone have any experience with small and medium sized dogs?

I'd consider breeds like cocker spaniel, dalmations, or maybe labs if they aren't that big (you know, we're not talking about pure pedrigree, lol). the only experience i ever had with a male was with a rottie. But i've seen many medium sized and i guess he/she could handle one like that .
