My first one today..
Today, 255 years ago, on 23 August 1770, Captain James Cook, commanding the HMS Endeavour, charted the east coast of Australia and claimed it for Great Britain, naming the territory New South Wales. His meticulous observations and surveys of the coastline, which included landing at Botany Bay, formed the basis for Britain's decision to establish a penal colony there 18 years later, in 1788.
