It breaks my heart when I come across articles about the numbers of dogs, pigeons and horses our forebears dragged off to war, only for them to die. The war was between humans, inflicting untold horror on each other, and we thought it would be a good idea to drag our friends and companions along? We can be such twats sometimes.
