Quite a gal....Gable was outraged when she was to be excluded from the Academy Awards, in which she won a "Best Supporting" Oscar For Her role of "Mammy" in GWTW, A first for a Black performer, because the Ceremony was to be held in a "White Only" Establishment, The Cocoanut Grove. He actually told the Studio he would not attend, but his close friend, Hattie McDaniel, told him he HAD to go....Even if she could not. Eventually, the venue set up a table against the Far Wall away from the Stage, for McDaniel and her guests. Still not right, but better than ignoring her.
That's not the first time I've heard of Clark Gable speaking up like that, along with his actions. There were at least a few times when he did that on movie sets when he saw such inequality, refusing to even continue until it was made right. A fine man.
