Roughly the same area today. The purple flowers are called "Fireweed". This often blooms out of smoking ash. Its the first flowering plant after a burn, and it attracts bees and other pollinators into the damaged plots. If you are lucky enough to ever see 'Genuine Fireweed Honey' available....grab it....you will not regret it. The shoots of the plant in spring are edible, tasting a bit like Wild Asparagus.Chamerion_angustifolium_9_lg.jpg
 
The older " Little Rascals" around 1945. Not sure about all of them, but the top two are 'Alfalfa' and 'Butch'
