Would you rather turn into the species of your current animal partner? (Maintaining your relative sense of IQ and EQ as it pertains to customs of the species...yet subject to the mating habits of the species. Like you go in heat, etc etc)

Or...

Have them become human? (Maintaining the relatively same IQ and EQ they had as a ______. Capable of speech and the relative personality they had.)
