So im going to start this with a bit of background on me as a dog owner and zoo. This is the first time I have posted in a long time. I am seeking advice with a few different things and have a ton of questions about what to do when I want to have intercourse with my next mate.(THIS POST IS LONG)
I am currently in the preparation phase of this. I do currently have a dog who I got spayed because she wanted it. She is currently 8 years old, a mix between a malinois and pitbull. She weighs 50lbs and is very muscular now since we have been working out. I had her spayed at 3 years old. I attempted during her second heat cycle and familiarizing her with sexual aspects but she didnt enjoy it, so I stopped. Her 3rd heat cycle was unfortunately around intact male dogs and she was not having it with them either. I tried one last time with her during her 4th heat and she was not having it. During my attempts I never got past rubbing and I was gentle, I just was interpreting what she was saying to me. She wasnt happy, she didnt enjoy her heats and tended to get depressed and just spend most those days in her kennel (her choice, I didnt lock it after she was potty trained). And my landlord was pressuring me to get her spayed so I figured it was best for her. She has lived a happy life since then and is incredibly well behaved. Super intelligent, super friendly, and again very well behaved. Obviously well loved to and gets plenty of attention.
I have been a zoo for most my life and came to terms with it about 9 years ago.
I am currently preparing to get another dog. I dont know what I want or what I should get. Heck I cant even decide whether it should be male or female. A friend is offering me a German shepherd x husky and she is adorable from pics, about 3 months old, being crate trained the same way I would (only locked at night) and has all her shots. Plus shes intact. I currently live in a decent environment for dogs. My current one hasnt had to be on a leash since we got here. Out in the forest with plenty of room to run and play, plus I run at least one mile every other day. The winters here will be harsh tho most days will be below 32. I plan on fencing in my yard and installing a dog door on the rear door. I may end up going back to the city where its the opposite, most days during the summer are over 100. I totally know about AC and heaters. But obviously dogs need to go outside. I feel both explanations for why id want to keep my dog intact are solid. For females, its because I wish I could have my current dog have puppies, shes so well behaved and well mannered and has never had any serious medical issues in all 8 years of her life and she ate an entire loaf of raisin bread once and an entire bag of dark chocolate pretzels. She was so sneaky! Got up on counters and reached up to the fridge. Somehow she didnt get sick period, i think she had the shits but thats it, i was freaking out when she did all that obviously. And for males its simple lol would you want your balls cut off?
It's because I may have to move back to the city and explain to my landlord why I dont want to have the dog spayed. I mean both are valid but I do want the relationship to be sexual as well if my partner would be okay with it. On that note, I know a lot about male dogs and sexual things because it seems a little easier and they are more receptive. On them its a different set of questions, how to prevent marking is the main one. But females... I mean, I have tons of questions. What is an apporiate time to start seeing if they are interested in that? Ive read the how to guide here but I was informed and saw that you can familiarize them during their first heat, not having sex, but rubbing and what not. I understand it also matters about the dog themselves and each one is different so theres no golden rule? Or am I mistaken. Its why im asking hopefully my curiosity isnt getting this post banned. I also want to know about the risks of UTIs. Im assuming I should be cleaning myself and her/him beforehand? Or what's the rule there? What are other risks involved in that kinda stuff. Ive done it before but with other owners who had various opinions.
Different note, what kind of pet supplies are recommended, my current dog is low maintenance in that aspect, she only likes tug of war and wrestling. At this point I dont even have her on a collar because she doesnt leave my side, I obviously know a puppy is a whole different thing. I devoted a massive amount of time training my current dog when she was a puppy and I won't treat this new one any different. But what kind of puppy food do you recommend? What kind of toys? I have plushies i own and will train the new puppy to dislike plushies because of that reason. Should I get a doghouse? Or is an all time open dog door okay? Any advice on how to groom a dogs coat? Or when to? If possible links would be great here. Anyone have used those electric nail clippers and paw pad polishers? How do those work? O and I heard a friend once trained there dog to ask for sex via a designated toy? Any experiences here. Im thinking of doing that later. Sorry random questions that will repeat below. Side story my current dog hates all those things so I tend to just do... the bare minimum. She showers once a week or every other week in the woods and once a month at home she fights me with all her might and I wish I knew why but she has since she was a puppy absolutely HATES water. And grooming, shes got such short hair that I dont have to. I just deal with her shedding during the spring. And nail clippers/pawpad polisher. I cut them when they are bad but shes allowed to dig in the woods and skateboards with me in the city so her nails are good and paw pads she doesnt like touched like that. Im wanting to redo these things in my new puppy and its why im asking for recommendations. I plan to focus heavily on introducing those items and showing they arent the end of the world so I dont have to deal with another dog that hates showers and fights with all her might to stay outta water
TLDR: Getting new puppy. Male or female? Breed? based on active lifestyle that can vary from wilderness to city. Including super cold and hot (Yes they will be indoors so AC and heat exist there) What age is appropriate for starting to familiarize them with sex based on your experience? (Non-explicit) Toy recommendations for puppies that arent plushies? Nail clipper recommendations. Paw pad polishes? Good or bad? Cool or not? Any tips on how to introduce a puppy to water? Puppy food recommendations? I currently use purina one salmon and tuna for my dog and its kept her in tip top health. What am I missing for a puppy on my list? I have toys, collars, tags, leashes, food, kennels, beds, shots, and time, I plan on spending tons of time with the new puppy. My rule is first 2 days non stop training(besides when they sleep duh) then 2 weeks of intense training (30ish hrs a week) then 2 months of moderate training (15-20hrs a week spent training/playing) and then its just normal training and improving. Obviously each dog works differently but I did that with my current dog and it worked out phenomenal.
