Marie's Pet

This image has long fascinated me. It's art by the photographer Jan Saudek in Prague, probably in the 1980s (judging by the boom box in the corner). It may be titled "Marie's Pet," but I'm not sure about that. It's just, haha, you know, you're not supposed to ride a dog, but the lady is doing it! Actually she's doing a pretty good job of distributing her weight over his shoulders and hips, so she doesn't hurt his back. Still, it's impressive, he's supporting the weight. What kind of dog is he? Are there dogs like this commonly in Czech Republic? He's a big, strong, handsome fellow, but not jowly like the Mastiff family.

Indeed, it would be so much better if the dog looked happy, and he does not. I would say he looks put-upon. <rimshot> But he's her pet, and I think he forgave her as soon as she took her weight off of him.

I think his ears are just folded back, as a stressed dog does.
