Chrome and Firefox can be setup to open videos in VLC from settings. Laptop/desktop/Android.

Not so much - VLC exists for iOS (and practically any other reasonably modern - say, 2010 or newer - operating system) Y'just have to download whatever it is you're trying to watch to the phone before you can watch it.

Not that I'd use a phone to access this sort of material, even if the capability was "baked into" the OS... Even the thought of tying a "live" phone number to this lifestyle strikes me as absolutely NUTS.

Good point!
I know on my Droid, Hide.me covers DNS leaks and is a good VPN, but limited in BW. Otherwise I use my "burner phone".
