Disable archaic file formats

Big thing this time.
How about we disable some old file formats of uploadable files?
wmv, avi, mpg, mpeg... for example. Those that do not play in the browser and take up unnecessarily large amount of space.

1. It would solve the problem of people not being able to play the videos without download.
2. It would help us review porn more effectively since the videos would not need downloading and the filesize would be smaller.
3. It would force people to convert their porn to something more modern.

Agree. And enable newer like .webp etc.

Haha! Pes said "BigThing"!
Drinking game: take one and say horhor anytime a mode makes an entendre.

Speaking of which what's the deal with posting a .png? Often it works often it doesn't. In the latter case, I get an error message that vanishes b4 I can read it and then my zooville window closes.

No idea. Never happened to me.
But png is a bad format to use. It is large and it can contain nasty metadata.
Always convert to jpg and then remove metadata and then upload.

No. Wmv, avi and mpg are perfectly common media files. You simply can't just force people to use your prefered file type by banning others.
Those have their place in professional web design, not in media sharing. In IT backwards compatibility is a really big thing after all. That's why windows is full to the brim with legacy stuff. Also most people simply have no clue about converting file types. They use the one their recording device spits out.

My thoughts:
I recommend listing what formats are acceptable/permitted and which are not in a pinned post somewhere on the forum. I've had to post some limited audio material in .avi as .mp3 isn't permitted when it's a common format for audio.

The two video formats I use are .mp4 and .mov (I've had some difficulties with both here on ZV). I've noticed that when converting .mov to .mp4 the files will oftentimes become larger which defeats the purpose of conversion.

I convert ALL picture material to .jpg. It's annoying that a lot of up-loaders now use webm for media rather than mp4 and webp for pictures rather than jpg...

Fuck webp.

What I want to know is why some pictures won't embed. I haven't been able to figure out what it is, but some will just show as a gray box below the post, which means they won't embed properly until the post itself.

Plus, sometimes they keep the original file name, sometimes it gets changed to a string of digits.

Although you make valid points there are several free conversion programs that are simple to use. People that are going to use technology have some responsibility to learn how to use it rather than sit back, lazily complaining that everything isn't totally cookbook. One thing that annoys me is when software developers try to make things totally automatic and idiot proof hamstringing some of us ancient, competent users have to battle to control our own processes. I learned electronics back in the 70's on vacuum tubes, long before cell phones were the 'norm'. I've managed to stay reasonably competent in using today's technology. Others should be able to do the same!

Wtf is webp anyway? I see it now but didn't b4

Ooh, vacuum tubes. I learned on relays like gawd intended.

Good idea. We should either accept every format including its flaws or make everyone convert to the One True designated format b4 uploading.

The likelihood of this idea being accepted is next to negligible.
That is why I said big thing. :D
So have fun debating what format is good for what until one of the admins closes the thread. :D

A piece of shit format google created to save space in their image search system. No program besides google has the ability to create a webp file, and if you're not careful their crap assed site will make you download and save a webp instead of a real file.
Phuuc... as they say in Vietnam. .

There have been so many times I've drag and dropped a picture onto my computer, just to open it later and realize it's a fucking webp.

Sie hast recht. Vorgessin Sie nicht aucht Panzerabwherkanonen.
"Sie haben recht. Vergessen Sie zudem nicht die Panzerabwehrkanone."
Nobody uses the formal "Sie" salutation in the internet (at least nobody under 70).
The more collegial "Du" would sound better.
"Du hast recht. Vergiss zudem nicht die Panzerabwehrkanone."
"Auch" isn't a good choice either. It would either sound a bit proletarian, or would fit better in a question.
"Zudem" is the better choice here.

Well, my German is from my moms cussing and college years ago. I worked in Freiburg 2014 but all the engineers spoke English.

You live there?

You're lucky. I've got a bulgarian programmer recently. Great C# specialist, but learning the german language breaks him.

Ha! My ex was from there. Funny, German grammar is easier than slavic. She called me germy and I called her bulgy!

First zoo girl.

It makes reasonable sense to only allow formats the site is able to supply a viewable player for. Why support a format that has to be downloaded first
And played or viewed on another application outside the browser? Other option is to run a transcoder on the site backend that standardizes to one universal format that all browsers support. (At least one recent in the past few years across platforms).

20 FPS .3GP or GTFO.

Could also do with removing certain formats. like .zip. But here is a list of all the formats currently.

zip, .txt, .pdf, .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .gif, .wmv, .avi, .doc, .docx, .flv, .m4v, .mov, .mp4, .mp4v, .mpeg, .mpg, .ogv, .webm, .mp3, .opus, .ogg, .wav

I think the newer version of Xenforo supports webp files.

@FloofyNewfie
this has been needed for a while so would greatly appreciate this change aslong as it doesn’t remove old things posted before this change
