There is a documented study of a black wolf in Yellowstone. He was never an alpha wolf but sired the majority of pups in the area during his quite long (for wolves ) life.

Only thing is, there is no such thing as an "alpha wolf", that has been debunked by the same guy who came up with this concept. It was pretty much a misinterpretation of the pack structure of wolves but has become a popular and persistent myth by now. And as we all know, popular myths never die. It's like with the dolphin zoos, when every so often someone shows up claiming that a male dolphin has a deadly pressure when it comes to his ejaculation. And for wolves it's either the "alpha" concept or the idea that they not only are howling up the tree, but also at the moon, which also isn't the case. Well, technically they may, but it has nothing to do with the moon being there or not. Yet such myths always remain.
