Why did my message count drop?

Why did my message count drop?
The day before yesterday, I had got up to 90 messages.
Then yesterday, I only had 40,
And this morning... 6, and knocked back to 'voyeur.
I admit that the majoity were to welcome newbies. I didn't see nothing wrong with that. I've seen others do the same thing again and again.
If this was malicious, is there a way to get them back?
