Guys act weird around their mares or their stallions. And it’s always a long standing joke in the industry and you can get pretty clear vibes. Would I ever act on it? Absolutely not.
But dog people all act similar to me I wouldn’t even begin to suspect anyone about dogs. It be a total coin toss.
That may be the case, my immediate experience is that while they're "close and funny" about their mounts, it doesn't mean they're zoos. Actually far from it.
I'd say that I'd rather trust how their horses behave around them more than I'd trust what I see of the owners. That right there is the uh, proof- in-the-pudding.
Many years ago I went to see this pony stallion for sale a few suburbs over. When I got there, I was met by a lady of middle age, she told me that she didn't have time to take care of the chap and yadda-yadda-yadda... anyway, as I head over to see the little chap, out of the house slinks this lady's elder daughter, who then joins us with a little more than strange concern on her face at the prospect of me looking at the horse. I kinda put that to the side and proceeded to look at the chap, pick his legs up, lead him, all that. As I did that, I noticed that the guy had only eyes for the daughter, and seemed to get rather "excited" at her sight. She seemed to be getting more worried for the whole situation, but it didn't seem to be "worried because he had a hardon" but but a deeper, situational kind of worry like "he's going to take him"-worry
Her mom then developed a bit of a "motor mouth" and was visibly embarrassed making up some excuse about him being excited about some other horse in the nearby yard.
So, I started chuckling at myself as I think I put together what was happening there: so here we have a little chap who couldn't give a rat's ass about the mom or the horse in the next yard, but gets an instant hardon when the elder daughter slinks out of the house. Now, his "instrument" is incredibly clean and polished, and whatever we did, he kept his eyes and attention on the daughter, and he'd do his damndest to get and stay close to her. We also had the daughter who seemed to be in a bit of a distress at the sight of me assessing the chap for a potential buy. And a highly embarrassed mom who felt like she had to justify the hardon on the little chap. By my reckoning, the daughter has been sharing her honey-pot with the little chap for long enough that such a tight relationship had formed. It is also my reckoning that the mother must've caught the two lovers going at it hammer and tongs and decided that she'd get rid of the little chap to direct her daughter toward lovers with fewer legs than 4.
Honestly, there were *way too many* coincidences here to be anything but!
Much to the chagrin of the mother - and the visible relief of the daughter, I decided the guy was not a prospect for purchase and thanked them both (for the comedy show) and left, laughing to myself all the way home.
To be honest, I'd love to know that she didn't sell the chap, because she couldn't. But, I haven't checked afterwards to see what happened. And I say, more power to the young lass too! She really looked like she cared about the little chap at a deeper level than "just a pet"
