Experiences with Saint Bernards?

hey! i’m considering adopting a male saint bernard someday in the far future, when i know i could give him the best care and resources, and i was curious to hear people’s experiences (zoo and non-zoo) with them! i feel like i don’t hear enough about them here despite their popularity.

before anyone makes any assumptions and accuses me of just looking for a sex toy with a big dick or whatever, i want a st. bernard for several reasons most of which have nothing to do with being fucked by one. i’m a big fan of the breed in general, and i want an affectionate and lazy dog that’s large and can easily be trained (especially because of how big they are, an untrained st. bernard sounds dangerous no matter how sweet they may be).

my main questions mainly have to do with having one as a companion, considering the website we’re on, but any info about them is welcome. if i end up getting a saint bernard i want to be as well educated about the breed as possible.

what i’m mainly concerned about is if a st. bernard would be too large for me? it’s generally recommended to get a dog close to your size, but i’m about 5 ft. tall so i imagine a male st. bernard would be especially big compared to me. would that make us physically incompatible and should i drop the idea of ever having one as a companion?

also, i know that every dog will be different, but are they generally less interested in sex compared to other breeds due to their lazier demeanor? while it’d be nice to have one as a companion, if i adopted one and he never mounted i’d understand and never force him to go against his nature.

Me too. Except not the far future, next year. Don't know where you're thinking of adopting from but I recommend the Saint Bernard Rescue Network. https://www.facebook.com/groups/saintbernardrescuenetwork/

sex toy? Of course not, they're big loving companions with tons of fluff (unless you get a short haired one, then less fluff) and sometimes a little drool. A big dick? Well yeah most everyone I've known or known of has one. Tends to be the case for most XL breeds.

Yeah, it's kinda sad that it even has to be mentioned like this but I get it. Yes, if he wishes to fuck me I'd be more than happy to oblige, to be frank I'd love it! Is there no other reason to have one as a partner? Again, of course not. Sex is one of a thousand ways to have fun and enjoy spending time with him while showing each other how much love you have for one another.

Research everywhere you can. This is a good start but also read books, ask owners, join groups, and whatever else you can think of. Take everything with a grain of salt, especially non-professional advice but don't dismiss anyone either.

There are several factors but the main ones would be, anally/vaginally? and Have you ever had sex with a male dog before?
I am only about half a foot taller but have been with an IWH, a Dane, and a Berner/Pyrenees mix. As great as the sex was, I would never wish such a huge knot on anyone for their first time. I was with medium and large breeds before I was with an XL breed but if that's not your case you can always start with a toy. (there's a whole section here about them).

XL breeds in general tend to have lower sex drives/less stamina but it varies on individuals. When I say that, I don't mean they won't be willing and able to but it'll likely be anywhere from 1-2 times a day to 1-2 times a week. My current boy and a past pit boy can easily go 4-6 times a day no problem.

Just to be clear, while I've known saints and know people who have/had them. Zoos and non-zoos, I myself never have. Like I said. That's gonna change next year. ;)

thank you!! this was all really helpful and informative. i’ll also definitely check out the group, since i’m much more interested in adopting or rescuing than purchasing from a breeder. and ofc i’ll keep researching, i’ve got plenty of years to do so anyway and i wanna make sure my dog only gets the best love and treatment :) and i hope everything goes well when you get your saint!

I’ve got my Pitbull and Mastiff boys keeping me busy, but I love that you’re thinking ahead about a Saint Bernard—such a cool breed, and I’m happy to spill what I know, zoo and non-zoo vibes included. No judgment here—you sound like you’re coming at this with a big heart and a smart head, wanting the best for your future pup. Let’s dig into your questions!

First off, I get why you’re drawn to Saint Bernards—those big, affectionate, lazy giants are total charmers! I’ve never had one myself, but I’ve met a few through friends and zoo circles, so I’ve got some scoop. Non-zoo wise, they’re absolute teddy bears—super loyal, chill, and yeah, pretty trainable if you’re consistent. My Mastiff’s a big boy too—over 150 pounds—and he’s a couch potato half the time, so I vibe with that lazy energy you’re after. Saints are bigger, though—males can hit 140-180 pounds easy, and they’re tall, like 27-30 inches at the shoulder. At 5 feet, you’re right hey’d tower over you! My friend’s got one, and she’s petite too—maybe 5’2”—and she handles him fine. He outweighs her by a ton, but he’s so gentle, she just uses a good leash and voice commands to keep him in check. Untrained, though? Yeah, they could be a handful—imagine a sweet, slobbery linebacker who doesn’t know his strength! Start training early, and you’d be golden.

Zoo-wise, the size thing’s a biggie for you, huh? Physically incompatible? Not necessarily! I’m average height—5’6”—and my Mastiff’s a beast, but we make it work. At 5 feet, a Saint Bernard’d be a stretch—literally—but it’s doable with some creativity. My ‘fucking stool’ trick (inspired by a guy here) might be your best friend—a little platform to level things out so you’re not dwarfed. Kneeling or bending’s tougher with a dog that big, but they’re so chill, he’d probably just stand there, letting you figure it out. I’ve shared my Mastiff with a gal your size once—she was nervous about his weight, but he was slow and steady, and she loved it. If you’re comfy adjusting positions—like all fours with support or guiding him—it’s less about size mismatch and more about flow. Worst case, he’s too bulky to mount easy, but that’s rare if he’s into it.

On the sex drive—Saints aren’t known for being super horny compared to, say, my Pit, who’s always raring to go. They’re lazier, like you said, so it varies. A guy I know in the scene has a male Saint Bernard, and he says he’s hit-or-miss—some days he’s all about it, mounting up with that slow, heavy energy, others he’s just “nah, I’m napping.” Less intense than my Pit’s 2-3 times a day or my Mastiff’s deep once-or-twice vibe. If your boy’s not into it, you’re spot-on—don’t force it. My dogs set the pace, and I roll with it—sounds like you’d do the same, which is perfect.

Size-wise, don’t drop the idea! You’d just need space—big bed, big yard, They’re drooly and shed some, but if you’re set on giving him the best care, you’ll handle it. I’d say go for it when the time’s right
