That is unfortunately the issue with this site.

I'm still learning my way around, and as a male I don't have that issue, but a mod like @pes , @FloofyNewfie or @Oldman could advise you better than me on your account settings to avoid the trash..

Turning off PMs is pretty easy. Click on your profile up at the top of the screen then select "Privacy" > scroll down to "Allow users to:" > You'll see the option "Start conversations with you" > Click the dropdown box and select "People you follow" or "Nobody." > Save the settings.

That'll stop pretty much all unwanted PMs, but will allow you to still start conversations with other people as long as they haven't disabled their PMs.

As a side note: If you're on mobile, depending on which browser you're on you may have to press the hamburger button "☰" > select your profile > then select "Your account" > then select "Privacy." After that it's pretty much the same as above.
