Get to know different breeds. Go to dog shows, talk to owners and get to know the ins and outs of the different breeds. Figure out what would fit your living situation/lifestyle and go from there.

This is best advice. Depends upon what you are looking for if you are very active or maybe more laid back look into dogs that will fit your life style, do your research. If there is a breed you are more interested in or leaning towards its a good idea to get a general idea of what the common personality traits are, energy levels, training requirements, medical care, etc. If you are able to sufficiently meet the needs and like the breed then go for it.
That is something a dog absolutely does not care about at all.
