Tail or no tail?

For Dobermans, I understand that ear docking is a purely aesthetic choice. But is there any reason beyond looks to dock a Dobie tail? Asking for a future friend.

The reason why Rottweiler and Dobermanns tails are cut off is somewhat outdated. In the past many people used them as a "cheap horse" to pull small carriages and they often broke their tails due to that and other work. So basically the tails get cut off the prefend them from break,as they are more fragile than common tails. Ears are just aesthetic.

The reason for livestock guard dogs to cut off ears and the tail were simple. They are weak spots for enemies. Easy to grab,hurt and turn a fight.

It's a topic I feel strongly about . I always like to share more, and have tons of stories, but I have to mindful that sharing too much may start a trail of dots for someone to connect.

I don't have a tail cut dog, so I can't speak for that.

I have dogs with cropped ears and I prefer this in terms of the appearance of the breed. Fortunately, the ears of the russian shepherd breed are cut after birth, so it does not cause any particular trauma to the puppy.
For example dobermann ears are cut at the age of 3 months, a much more problematic case. It is difficult to heal and involves pain, it is necessary to bandage it. Since I don't like dobermanns, I can't comment on that either.
Caucasians and central asians take ear cropping with ease, as it is done after birth when they are still deaf and blind. The vet has a special hot cutting machine for it.

The idiotic EU banned veterinarians from doing this operation, but a lot of vets do it, because it's much better than having the owner cut it off at home with kitchen scissors.
Another example of when laws are created based on stupid animalprotectors.

Tail definitely. Although I find dobermans to be pretty hot, I hate that it's not their natural look and they don't come with short tails by default. I'd not chop one up if I had one.

Anyhow, the longer the tail the more expressive they are! Long fluffy sweepers are my kinda thing. Curly tail is wonderful on female dogs too and currently my favorite!

I like dogs with long fluffly tail, and animal with best tail are foxes but braided horse tails are close to first place for me.

I prefer tails and ears left natural. However, there are a few breeds that wag their tails so violently that they hit things and get injured. Ears were originally cropped in fighting dogs to prevent them from being torn. Anyone who willingly participates in dog fighting deserves a fate worse than death, IMO. Some livestock guardian breeds have a very short ear crop. If they are actually working at that, I'm OK with it. For a non-working companion, no.

I have lived with an assortment of Pembroke Welsh Corgis. They only have a nub, so it looks a bit odd to me when they have more than that. One of my neighbors has a Rottweiler who came from Europe. She has a nice otter-type tail and it looks good on her.

I once knew a Doberman who had parvo virus when he was a pup and it was doubtful he would survive. He lived, but his tail and ears never got done. With a long tail and floppy ears, most people thought he was some sort of hound. He was so friendly that nobody believed he was a Dobie.

I prefer tails and don't believe in docking them for any reason, unless medically necessary. My dog came with a docked tail and I can only imagine how much his intact tail would wag every time I see his short nub wiggle left and right. People whack tails off of mutts around here and it breaks my heart. I suppose they think it makes their dogs look more badass or something.

What we are basing our choice on a body mod now? How rude! Simply put i love all breeds no matter what. A poor pup cant help what some idiot did to it. Just as I can't help the fact my parent's couldn't stand up and say no to some stupid tradition called circumcision because of their deep sda roots and based on this unkind, unnecessary alteration to your most personal bits some folks will have nothing to do with you they will shun you and say eww that's ugly, looks weird, etc.. etc.. Love the dog for its inner personality and ability to make you feel all warm and cozy all over when it excepts you no matter what and wiggles its way into your heart, sticks it cold nose in the palm of your hand, comes up and gives you friendly nuzzles, and licks, etc.. etc.. all of the cool things a dog will do that says, " i call you friend now and except you no matter what and will do anything you ask of me because you are my friend now and forever and I would do anything for you." A dog will love unconditionally as we all should no matter if they have met you for the first time our have been with you forever, I tend to give all dogs this same consideration if they go out of their way to make friends with me. Please never base love on pointless things. Besides I get pissed at people who do unnatural things to their animals and I consider it cruelty and messing with the natural order. I'll take any dog that takes me no matter what.

Sorry if I got on a soapbox there but I am getting fed up with people basing their love, acceptance, and choices on truly superficial things in so many instances before taking a truly deeper look. Many folks do this with every aspect of life. Be willing to go deeper people and no I am not talking in a sexual fashion.

eyup! These have been my questions for some time now. Folks are sick and disgusting indeed where this matter is concerned. There is also indeed a massive amount of hypocrisy surrounding it. As to the disease aspect it has been proven that nonsense is simple bs. If so you would be hearing about higher rates in those countries that have banned the practice or from the catholic community. It boils down to the fact it is a big money maker and mommies and daddies are too lazy to teach their little boys proper cleanliness practices. The fact is woman who were not taught proper cleaning methods do suffer more frequent issues. Indeed america is a big fuck you guys country. The subject was brought up to the cdc head years ago and he simply stated the same false notion about guys not needing it because one the skin was basically unnecessary and not having it was a sure way to prevent the spread of disease and kept you from getting things. Someone was linning his pockets and getting him to see it their way. The only way this will end is if we the injured ban toghether and sue for damages.

Since I'm always against any surgical procedure done to animals for any reason other than medical necessity, and I detest any snip and cut out of "aesthetical" reasons done to any creature, unless it's done on a consenting person, I of course prefer intact dog tails (and ears). But as others already mentioned, animals can't chose what has been done to them. I wouldn't love a mutilated dog any less than an intact one.
