Back in the day, like 1800s on back.
People spent a lot more time alone with animals than they tend to now. Heard of cattle or sheep, hunter/trappers. Or just pioneers headed west.
There had to be a lot more sex with animals going on.
I love the thought of being out on the range. Far from civilization, camped out by a river somewhere. You start feeling horny, look over at your mare, maybe your sheep or whatever critters you happen to have with you and you think to yourself “that looks a lot better than my hand”.

It absolutely did happen. There is a reason so many old time codes of laws had specific bans on sex with animals, and usually with harsh punishments. Such laws are rarely enacted unless its something people are doing.

In Sweden during the 1600s, they had such a problem with shepherds getting caught and tried for bestiality that there were places where only women were allowed to work with animals in a capacity where they would be alone with them for long periods. From 1644 to 1778, the punishment for bestiality was decapitation, and over 600 people suffered that punishment.

With so many getting caught, and the chance of getting caught so low if you were careful, you can bet that it was a quite common practice among shepherds and others working with animals. I do believe much of this was similar to what you describe; someone is alone with animals around them and just decide to take the opportunity. "True" zoophilia is likely not more or less common today than back then.

Makes perfect sense. I have no doubts a horny guy alone with a animal and glistening pussy would no doubt go for it. They may not be thinking from the aspect that they find the animal sexy as in what a proper "zoo" would, but more of a warm moist place to get off. There is no doubt in my mind that empathic people who found themselves working with animals day after day would start to have more and more complex feelings for those same animals. But how far that ended up going is of course impossible to know

hmmm, honestly I don't like this idea, if a female animal had objected and reacted aggressively, then at that time there would not have been any antibiotics, antiseptic medicines easily available as they are today. At that time there was also a greater danger from wild animals like wolf, leopard which are almost on the verge of extinction today. Getting infected with septic was a big disease at that time, getting septic is not a big disease today. Looting, gang robbery, used to be a common thing at that time, losing a human life was not a big deal at that time, but even today there is danger but not as much, today everyone is a little afraid of the police, and borders cannot be crossed easily as they are today, at that time there were no international boards, sudden attacks used to happen at that time.
 
i find the idea of "it's better than hand.." as the reasoning rather repulsive, to be honest. like they're a substitute or something less.

You read in old medieval books about shepherds going up into the mountains of western and central Europe and staying with their sheep or goats, all alone, for months at a time. I think that it must have been inevitable that a great deal of it went on, if on account of loneliness more than anything else.
