SKUNKED

HELP! My boy got on the wrong side of a Skunk this afternoon... Anyone have an effective way to get rid of the smell? I tried Tomato juice, Lemon water, and Alkali dirt (we have lots of it around here) none of it helped. Baking soda may have worked a little, but not enough.

It will go away in about 6 years. :D I have not gotten skunked yet, but dog schampoos have so far been successful in removing various disgusting smells from my dog.

vinegar and dawn dish liquid did work on some dogs
Thanks I'll give that a try. poor guy is feeling really rejected since no one will come near him. Even I put on a rain coat and gloves before I try to clean him, and he isn't allowed in the house.

Dawn dishwashing soap is the only thing that really works. Everything else has a minuscule effect in comparison. The toughest part is the face, since you can't really do much soap around the eyes and water around the ears. Of course this is where they usually take the hit... Just be careful and do the best you can. Follow it up with another wash in oatmeal dog shampoo, and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The last dog this happened to here still just has one ear I can smell skunk on, and it's not that bad, Granted that was 4 months ago! The rest of her body was perfect though. I even let her sleep with me that same night.

OK... Thanks everybody. I now have a dog that at least we can stand being around. Poor guy has had more baths in the last 48 hours than in the year before. I think he has one more round to go before in can go in the house though.
I have learned some things that I should have known... 1 Always think about what you have done already before you take the next action. You get a very interesting result if you put vinegar on a dog you have previously dusted with baking soda! 2 If you live in a rural community, when it comes to animals, you can probably find an effective product at your local Farm Supply or feed and grain store. AFTER bathing him with Dawn (very effective by the way) I found something this afternoon at the local Big R that the Vet says works as good as anything. I will be keeping a bottle on hand just in case there is a need in the future.

Again- Thanks for the help

i'm glad it worked out for you and your boy... i'm also very glad skunks are not a thing where i live. sounds like a real pain in the butt to deal with.

In the last 10 years I have had 8 instances of dogs being sprayed. I think there is some sort of skunk hotel near my house. The last one I was able to get the dog into the shower within 10 minutes and wash her down with Dawn and the oatmeal soap, which I only used because it was on hand and it had a good smell. This was by far the best result I ever had. I'm convinced that Dawn is the key ingredient from all previous experience, but I also suspect that getting them in the shower ASAP helps a lot. hair and skin are permeable, and getting the stank off as quick as you can will keep the oils from penetrating.

P.S. edit, I'm starting to like the lower levels of skunk smell....

Skunks eat mice like they were potato chips. If you have a number of skunks around, try getting rid of the mice.
As far as deodorizing goes, there is a product known as Nilodor, sold as a deodorizer for sick rooms, that works, but if you use it on a dog or other pet, you will want to "cone" them for a day or so to prevent them licking it. I dont think its toxic, but toxicity is relative to species. The stuff works. Use it very sparingly, AFTER a bath.

Dawn dish soap mixed with Peroxide. Just be very carful around their eyes as Peroxide can blind. I have to de skunk my dogs every so often. This has always been my go to method.
