Male dogs marking

I have two smaller male dogs, one just over 1.5 years old and one still a puppy at 6 months. The older male was adopted, still intact, and has blended into the family so well over the last few months. He and the puppy are like brothers. Outside, when one marks the puppy marks. No problems there. They have free access to the outside.

Problem is the marking inside. They’re both marking all over the place. It doesn’t help that we have two elderly females, both over 14 and near blind. We do our best to get them outside to pee but we are not perfect and they either pee on the floor or in their bed. So I get that it’s confusing to the males.

We use a spray to neutralize the urine and get to it as fast as we can.

But at this rate, I don’t know what else to do. Would love advice from the community with intact males. The wife is ready to fix the males now because of this but I’m fighting it. They may be too small to go to pound town, but I still would like them to keep it.

What is everyone else doing?

Off the top of my head: you can take them outside obsessively so they have almost nothing to mark with, you can give them treats for going outide, you can verbally tiss-tiss them if you catch them marking in the act (but not after it's been done), you can use dog diapers so the marking smell doesn't get on your things and act as a beacon for next time (I don't think your spray is enough). Sometimes it can be necessary to crate them whenever you're not watching them so they don't have any opportunity to mark without your feedback. You can also step up the verbal reprimands to something much more severe, timeout. Everything dogs want to do is outside with you and putting them in a small isolated room like a bathroom (ideally not their crate) for 2 minutes or so then letting them out can work. Say "timeout" when you do it.

Thanks for the list. I have searched online as well. Was just curious what others did as well and if there was anything that worked great.

Following this thread. I had similar problem with male dog, a rescue in late pup stage. Tried everything (except de-sexing) without success.

Deagle113. He comes by only once and a while now. There's also at least one more.

I think it all depends on the dog. They can be very stubborn or try their best, self-reliant or trusting that you'll walk them, instinct driven or "go with the flow".
