I made a zoo flag

@Llandefie

I think that it was a very imaginative idea to use the colors of various zooey sites for it. I like that.
Aww, thanks

You know, your name was where I first thought to find an image of the zeta symbol before just typing it myself. Guess it was someone else who had that profile picture, but it's still funny you turned up :p

Did it for an emoji in a Discord server, thought it might be worth posting here too. I pretty much just used a bunch of colours from all the different zoo websites that are linked from here.

Anyone else got any flag proposals, or has an existing one totally slipped my mind?

perhaps give the Zeta the slightest white frame or hue around it, so that it optically "hovers" in front of the colors. The foot of the symbol vanishes a bit in the color there.
I'd be interested in seeing what effect it would make to tilt the color bars 45°

I liked that idea and made it into a proper rectangular flag. I made two versions, but I'm not sure I'm satisfied with either. It's an idea though. Turning the bars would involve a lot of number crunching to get them even, though.

I think maybe it just needs a thicker outline or something, I just struggled to make it even. I'm using GIMP, I'm sure it'd be way easier on Photoshop.

A flag is something where a vector graphics program is very suitable. Inkscape is a free one and the SVG file format is supported in every browser. But you can use whatever you want of course. If you've got a version you are satisfied with, I can make an SVG version too, if you are fine with that.

you know I think a heart is a great concept for zoo imagery. after all were about the love of our animals more so than the lust. Granted I may be one horny guy but at the same time I make sure my animals are at their happiest and healthiest at all times. Again great concept!
Oooh, that gives me an idea. How about I surround the symbol in a white heart instead?

I'll get right on that.

I love it. I assumed there was a zoo flag until I tried to look it up a few weeks ago and got nothing. I like the flags that just have colors rather than a symbol but that's just my personal preference, I think they're cleaner and easier to recognize from different angles, or if partially obstructed. I like the rectangular one, it matches most other flags. Being in Ohio I'm used to the inconvenience of a non rectangular flag. But I definitely think we need a flag, and I'm glad you made one. The colors are very appropriate.

You can, of course, lose the symbol and just have the colours if you ever wanted to fly this thing or reproduce it somewhere else. I see where you're coming from though, I just felt it was an important symbol to our community, and the heart I'm including now is a reminder that this is about love, not abuse as many believe.

An image search for "zoophile flag" results in about a dozen designs, most are variations of this one:

I like the colors on this one (you'll never guess why lol) but unlike most of the other GLBTQ flags, there's never any explanation of what the colors represent. This is important. A flag is a high-visibility symbol and it's a chance for zoos to convey some core principles to others who see it and get curious enough to look it up. We should think carefully about this. And maybe expand on the hanky code while we're at it :)

Tada! Vectorised and hearted!

Yeah, I'm all for switching the colours. I think the heart is a good part of what we want to convey, then the zeta is just a symbol we can easily stylise and identify with and all that sort of thing. I did think a bit about the colours - the black at the bottom represents those who see zoo as a kink more than a sexuality. I suppose what we could do with the rest of the colours is represent the different ways people identify as zoo, so as exclusive, as hetero/homo towards different species, and the variety of species we love. I really like how this is looking so far though.

You're right, I can't guess why. Please do explain.

If we can come up with some good symbolic colours we can agree on, I might put up an article for the flag describing what it means as a more official source for the information. Any way I can upload the vector file to the site?

Right now, the heart symbolises love, the zeta is our shareable symbol, the black represents the fetishists and to me, the dark green of the symbol represents how many of us express our sexuality with our partners in dark fields at night. With horses and cows and such, you know? Brings us closer to nature.

I like when there are colors in the flag that are also to be found in animal fur, like in Llandefie's version . My canine companion is black for example. The orange makes me think of foxes. But I also think that it's good that it's not 100% fur colors, or we might end up confusing it with the bear flag.

I also like that the coloring reminds me of the world at sunrise/sunset. That's romantic. ?

Aww, that's sweet! Maybe we'll stick with it, then. Or possibly go a bit further and make a sunset out of all fur colours :p
It's not just fur though, either. The blue can be dolphin skin, the green can be reptile scales. Maybe I should swap the pink for something else and make the orange more ginger?

That's why it would be a good opportunity to chose meaningful colors, like those of different coats of fur. It might fit way more than the colors of different zoo-related websites.
