Well I just found out the theme for M*A*S*H is an actual song and I'm genuinely shocked, not because the song existed but because they used it for a show 😂😬

I've spoken to 3 people about this, one hasn't seen M*A*S*H and the other already knew of M*A*S*H's secrets so I want to know if everyone knew about this or if it's just me

It was written by the Johnny Mandel and his son. I think it even got into the charts, way way before I was born, although I may be wrong.

We sometimes play the entire series on DVD.
Yea it topped British charts in the 1960s or something which is how I found out about it! I was sitting there and I was like "is that fucking M*A*S*H?"

"Suicide is Painless" Charted in 1970, while the movie was still First Run....finished at number 7, as a piano number. It Charted again in the UK in 1980. MASH In either incarnation was never anything but Black Comedy. There was a war going on at the time in Viet Nam, and other conflicts were brewing.

Johnny Mandel did write the music, as Miz R says....but the Lyric was written by Director Robert Altman's 14 year-old son, Michael. When it became a TV Theme, it was made as an instrumental because the Lyric was thought to be too raw for a family audience.

Remember too, that one of the 1st season Characters was Captain Spaulding, played by Loudon Wainright III, who was in the role for his musical talents as much as his acting. The implication of the Guitar as the insturmental was that its a classic for Protest songs. As Woody said on his own guitar...."This Machine Kills Fascists".

Suicide Is Painless
The movie had the full lyric version, it's not exactly obscure knowledge.
I believe Jasper Carrot the British comedian did a cover called "National Health Is Painless, ... They guarantee you pay less ,... but I am going private any way."

was a good show, Classic now.

Yeah, totally. I'm aware of it through cultural osmosis mostly. Honestly I think the main spot reruns were on and the time I may have watched it was when I came home from school, but that was A-Team time baby. I mean, c'mon. The Mini-14.
