This is pretty cool:

Radio Boston aired this special episode on Dec 25 about humanity's relationship with animals and featured some very smart discussion with the authors of Our Dogs, Ourselves (dog cognition scientist Alexandra Horowitz) and Mama's Last Hug (biologist Frans De Waal), and a nice tidbit at the end with William McKeever and his book about sharks' role in ocean health.

The full hour is worth your time. I missed several exits listening while driving found the overall message very hopeful. Scientists are starting to shake off old conventions about avoiding anthropomorphizing non-human subjects and acknowledge the similarities with humans. The implication is that mainstream recognition of animals' mental capacities, and need for legal rights or even personhood, could greatly improve in the next couple decades.

I think that portends better days for us, too.

There are some emotionally charged moments, so be ready for those. Here's a link.
