DDOS Attacks, Server Load Issues and Donations.

Zooville has been facing an absolute wave of DDOS attacks and other denial of service tactics as of recent. The issue has gotten so bad & out of hand, i've come to help address and keep zooville running.

That is, keep zooville running as long as YOU the community, wish to keep it running. The staff has always agreed that to keep ZV running as long as it can be run, on the donation basis of the community to keep it running.

We are planning to spend a large amount of donations to fund the required DDOS protections and security measure to keep ZV running.

These expenses will be in the realm of an extra $3,000 per year to operate and with an additonal $3-5,000 upfront to initiate these upgrades over the next several months. likely before the end of December this year, onto the next year.

We have tapped into ZV's rainy day fund, and are grateful to have had it. However, it wont be sustainable unless YOU the zoo community wish to keep ZV alive with your donations. We can expect a yearly server costs of now 3800$ to 5000$ per year depending on the level of attacks we sustain.

I've been enjoying retirement, and glad to see ZV still strong 2 years later, and this is the limit of my return here. Keep the lights on, you the community still run things, and hopefully, keep this place a haven for zoo's worldwide.

Please Donate if you can. Zooville depends on it.

Thanks for letting us know. Based on the little communication we have had about the problem, Sloppytaco, the server admin is practically unreachable, several mods have tried to contact him unsuccessfully. I hope this notice means he is now looking into the issue and if not, please notify him too.

If the server admin is unreachable, then it's highly likely they've abandoned it (or they have been arrested, or have died). I've said this before in another thread, but ZV needs a new server admin and site owner, especially if the current ones decide one day to up and pull the plug on the site.

Is the ZV telegram announcements channel not a thing anymore?
Is there a backup chat group that can be started just in case?

I kinda figured that was the situation. Thank you for the public notice with the information.

I would like to donate via XMR but use this forum on a secure machine that does not contain my wallet which is mobile. Can you please update the crypto donation information to include QR codes to allow mobile wallets to easily capture the address? I tried copy/paste using OCR but failed with invalid address and I'm too lazy to type it manually.

Unfortunately, it's no longer a thing. I asked one of the mods back there about it, and they said something to the effect of: The person who was running that retired or something.

Appreciate the update - I suspect something like that might be case with the recent issues.

Will try to find some funds to donate in November; should be able to kick in a bit

Oh my… absolutely unreal.
Thank you for providing this information.
I will definitely donate !!

I’m hoping all continues to go well with these issues and keeping the server alive.

If there are any other ways to help aside donations, let me know!

My suspicions were true, but they wouldn't confirm them because it got out of hand. I hate those anti-zoo hackers. They want to attack us just for living a different lifestyle than theirs, and we're not even hurting anyone.
Most DDoS groups aren't motivated in that way, 99% of the time they don't care who you are, what you do. They're often financially focused, they most likely have posted a ransom to an email saying if you pay XYZ BTC the DDoS will stop, usually it doesn't stop and then you open yourself up to future attacks because they know you'll pay.
There are some that are politically motivated, however they would be attacking government sites, utilities and such.

Admin - what DDoS scrubbers are you looking at? I'd be surprised if cloudflare and such would want to be associated?

Ok i was just trying to provide another alternative in case something happens to zv we've not had any problems with our zoohaven chat on there.

I love this community. The first thing you need to do is be more tolerant of people. Especially girls, even if they sometimes do something wrong. And start a real fight against fakes. The third thing you need to do is connect something ready-made. I'm not an expert in this field, but why not use something like CloudFlare? I've heard that it's a very cheap and effective method. At least, it's used on many websites.

The problem with DDoS mitigation is that it has to scrape / scrub all traffic and then filter out the non-legitimate traffic into essentially a black hole (its far more technical than this). There would be a difficult line to determine best mitigation method versus privacy issues.
