Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) was one of my favorite film directors. In his "metaphysical" films the image of a dog always used to appear as a protective spirit or the figure of the father; all of them of a "wolf" style breed with stiff ears and a long snout.

All those anonymous actors of other species have always been on the screens, but Tarkovsky's poetic way of presenting them seems very beautiful to me.
