indeed....but you'd have to keep the dust in the wind up there from sanding it off every month....
One thing I neglected to mention....Bodie is a ghost town and a Cali State Park...It was a big mining area once, But I believe the last residents left about 1970. The Basque Shepherds run sheep in there in most winters.
 
The various Basques have been part of the American West for many years, more so after Guernica, compadre. Like em or not, they be tough folk.
The identity of most US inmigrants, human or animal, usually got diluted and integrated as time passed.
Basques have excelled at preserving their identity for... dozens of centuries, actually. Should not expect less than their herirage beeing preserved and remembered even across the ocean :)

And, yes, historical dog breeds bred for a purpose are sure the best bet to do the work.
