But the dangers were intense....I live in the Pony country....and Ive been in every station still standing in Nevada....they were often built without roofs here because it doesnt rain much.... Sir Richard Burton...not the actor....actually bitched about that in one of his books...wind.
But if you ask me, those boys were underpaid. The open stretches were long, the hills and mountains high and rugged...All the ponies got on the job training, since they were barely half-broke, the Paiute were very good at doing what they did....I'll tell you, the Paiutes were tough people....they lived and throve in country an Apache would have looked at, screamed, tore out his own hair and run back to New Mexico....This here is a hard land...
