Suggestion: Make new threads invisible until a mod approves?

Just reposting for better clarity.

The idea is to avoid instant-dumpster fire threads (like this one) and other dumpster-baity or overall pointless threads from seeing the light of day.
Yes, it sounds a lot gatekeeper-y, but it feels like "we" could use some of that. for a while at least... i also know some of them can be and are used to point out more let's say "damaged" users (like the incest one, not linking it), but is that really worth it?

thoughts?

I understand what you mean, but that would be a huge effort for the mods. Most of these threads come from new users. Therefore, it could be set up so that new users can comment but cannot open new threads until they have reached a certain number of comments. Like the DM function. That would avoid some of these dumpster threads and it would be automated without the mods having to do any extra work..

I get your idea, but I can't say I agree either...

Only reason for that is the number of dumb fucks that pass through here that just cruise right by the rule book.

And not only that, can't seem to browse around and see for themselves what gets people banned.

I say let the fuckers do dumbass shit and reap their rewards...

Better to get them out before they learn to hide what they're all about..

Approving every new thread would add a lot of clicking to the daily grind.
Also it would inevitably lead to either mistakes or people disagreeing with what a mod approved.
Higher limits to do stuff though is not a bad idea.
I would increase them for PMs too. 10 is laughable.

Limits on the number of comments and registration time are applied on many forums in the world.
Here, on such a sensitive forum, they are minimal. This has been a huge problem for years. Moreover, they still haven't managed to raise the ridiculous limit of 10 comments higher.

and this one

Users are right that if such threads are rejected, then it is no longer possible to filter members based on the comments received on them.

If new threads are to be approved and so, they are not visible, prepare for the same user creating the same thread like 20 times until he understands it us not working or reads the "your thread is in the approval queue, please wait"
😁

More work for the mods, less fun in the dumpster, dumb messages will not shine in an average idiots profile.

Having a minimum of 3 weeks and 20 posts before new accounts can create threads would improve things. I'd be a bit more stringent than that. The minimum for getting access to PMs probably doesn't need to be quite as high.

If you want to give the mods less work then have the new account registration process include a simple multi-choice questionnaire about the site rules. That would stop some of the unnecessary questions. Simplifying and shortening the rules section by removing the waffle would also help.

Really, it would be good if new users could not start a conversation, but could -get- messages from users and possibly answer that conversation.

But I am not sure if the forum settings will allow that in a simple way.

Most of the stuff suggested here is either impossible completely or impossible without plugins (some of which might be paid.) on an archaic version of the forum software with the HW admin being beyond unresponsive.
So...

How many extra mods will that require. And it is easy to imagine someone, who makes a post and sees it does not appear, but does not read the service message, to post the same again and again. There is a Dumpster Fire and a ban hammer. Also gives the rest of us some entertainment.

The simplest thing that is available in the basic software is still 10 comments and increasing the registration time.

The only add-on we use (Group section) is a bunch of crap.

This is a good idea, however, it won't stop them from derailing existing threads with their shit. So in reality it may triple our work load.
