Users search function

DedMendeley

Citizen of Zooville
Good day, Staff members. I want to offer a simple but potentially useful feature.

Many users have their own locations specified in account details. Why not add the ability to search for users using this parameter to the existing search capabilities? This would make it much easier to find like-minded people around and help us feel less alone. You can even create something like a map, which will show how many people from our community there are in the regions of the world. I find it inspiring. This will not violate the privacy of users, because all this data is already placed in the accounts by the users themselves. In addition, if they do not want to be reflected in the list, they can simply remove the corresponding description from their profile or write a joke.

I will be very happy if my idea is considered. Thank you in advance

Sure let's add a feature that allows all the antizoos and zoo hunters to easily get the location of anyone who adds such information to their profile.

Of course not! I didn't mean anything by it! I was referring exclusively to the general information that users already post in their description. No one writes exact addresses there

This is not a dating site. Adding this functionality is unlikely.
OK, thanks for the answer
I just thought it helped me find more like-minded people and bring the community together. You know, I myself usually sit in the Russian-language section. We have interesting people there, but I think they are closed character. Maybe it could enliven our corner

There's nothing unsafe about presenting already-public information on a map. This IS a dating site, among other things. That's why the mods manage a personal ads sub-forum. One issue is that most people don't want to be contacted randomly. It should be an opt-in feature to be on the map even if the location info is public. There would also need to be appropriate warnings that the practice of giving your location out is unsafe. For those determined to to give it out anyway, yolo.

The section exists so we do not have the trash spread across the entire forum in inappropriate places.
Other than that there is no support for dating here and people are not advised to use it for dating.
This feature would very likely not be something that exists as a plugin. Nobody is going to want to implement it by hand.
And if it exists as a pluging it would have to be a free unpaid plugin and compatible with the current version of the forum.
Very unlikely.

Yes. That's exactly what I meant

Then just add a new subsection in the search section so that you can find people from your city or at least country. The exact address isn't published there either

Aren't forums designed to communicate? If you can't get acquainted, then why do you need private messages? It's okay if people want to. In addition, they can opt out at any time by simply replacing the name of their location with a non-existent one or simply deleting it. Quite anonymously and voluntarily

People use the DM function here. Though seems people use it as a "Talk to me on another platform" because people think we can read DMs. But we're mods, why would we say otherwise you know? Ok, it has a report function. It only shows one post in it. But mods lie of course.

The forum doesn't have the option of doing a search by city, state, etc. The personals section is there for locations. Also not by male or female. It's a message board.

I think if anyone is looking to be found they would just post in the relevant personal ad section of the forum

It's all stored in a readable way so yes DMs are unsafe. That's how the site reads them to display on zooville. Whether it is mods who have access to read them or the admins, all the DMs are the potential plaything of someone. You are the mod who seems to work on the chat server in the chat thread; it is really odd someone with technical knowledge would say what you said.

Note to mods: It is frustrating how quickly my post went down and how slow it is for the relevant non-rule breaking parts to be restored. How much longer?

It's really odd someone that never ran a site or server just knows everything.
What do you think I can see on element? What do you think mods and administration can see on zv?
@FloofyNewfie
I guess you trust discord, snapchat, Facebook. Whatever site that makes money off of you.
I mean you do really have to put some trust in the people running the site. I am sure the mods probably already have enough to do dealing with all the creeps and keeping this a safe enough place that we can dm rather than to read them.

That's a strawman, which is also odd. Do you think that this forum keeps DMs unreadable for the people who have server access? How?

The section exists so we do not have the trash spread across the entire forum in inappropriate places.
There is no abuse sub-forum. I've also read from mods that this is not a porn site, and there are more porn sub-forums than I remember offhand. There is only one class on ZV. This site is not secretly for a sub-group of ZV users. Aside from that, I agree with the rest of your post.

Fuck the mod who deleted my relevant post instead of editing out a meme image that had a kid in it. How do you think that is going to play out for rule-compliance down the road?

The only one with access is sloppy. And some of us already have some doubts, and speculation on his stuff. Including some other sites he runs or ran in the past.

Good to know. How about database access? Or file access? Or plugin install access from a zip upload? Is this site run like a wordpress.com hosted blog?

It's not a free website running on a subdomain.....
Sloppy has access to everything. Even if he wanted to look at DMs, looking in a database isn't going to be some easy process. You honestly think it's going to list things out in a neat and orderly fashion? With some stuff I mentioned to others in DMs, if they were able to read them, I would've already had a talking to. Even if I wasn't a mod.

Normally yes if the person knows how to use a database. If there is some added security like all DMs are encrypted with the user's password, which I don't expect, that can also be defeated by serving a modified version on the forum that doesn't do the encryption properly or saves the user's password. Trust with this server and those who have access is needed in every scenario in the traditional way that website's are built.

That was genuinely funny.

"Secure" is a very high bar. I am only saying that knowing how websites are built, people should assume DMs can be read. I am not saying they will be or are being read. It is really not that hard to do.
