So Telegram/Vidogram are absolute trash, and skype is dead. What is a good messenger to use nowadays? Preferably one that has end-to-end encryption, but also has video calling capabilities. So far I'm on Signal, but I'm very disappointed with it. Also, I'd like a platform with both mobile and desktop capabilities. What's your recommendations?

I say telegram, even though you think it's trash. It has most of those extras. I think the only thing missing is video calling, but don't quote me on that. Just need to get a free burner number online that works with it. It is hit or miss, but once you get a number that works keep it alive by sending a minimum 1 random text to a random number every week.

@ZTHorse knows of another one, but you have to buy the app.

It's end-to-end only with secret chats only. It also crashed my phone to the point of needing a factory reset. To top it off, my friend was in a group chat with a bunch of random people and they started sending child porn in the chat. He quickly left and reported the group. But guess what telegram did? And saved a few of those CP images in his phone! He discovered that today, months after the fact. After hearing that, I'm done. I just don't trust it at this point. Vidogram is basically telegram's separate program for video calls. They're made by the same company and basically both integrate with one another.

Ouch, that sucks. I would go out on a limb and say that every single chat program, will have to download to the phone in order to view a picture. Checking the temporary folders and other associated folders will prove that. Otherwise it should be impossible to view a picture of any sort on your phone or laptop, as it does not exist according to said device. It will just show up as a file for you to download and view. With telegram, I know exactly where telegram saves the files so they can viewed, it is not hidden.

I am not trying to convince you to go to telegram, as it did not work for you, however I have to put my 10 cents in to defend telegram.... for now, lol!

The phone crashing might have been partially my fault as a friend and I sent like 300 pieces of furry artwork to each other in like a 3 hour window. Lol

I'm still on it for now, because well, it's what everyone uses. But I want something more secure.

And yeah, if i ever run into a situation like that, I will definitely be looking all over my appdata folders. Then again, I don't join random groups unless I know people in them.

I had never had a problem with Telegram, but then again, I don't bother with secret chats, ever. I am not sharing pornography on it, except occasional furry-themed sticker sets and gifs that are perfectly legal in my country. My activities on Telegram are simply not even slightly sexually focused.

Anyhow, good luck to you on finding what you are looking for.

I been using telegram and i never had any problems with it. Telegram is fine if ya use it correctly.

Telegram seems to be the popular choice. My only issue is the fact that they insist on a cell number. You can either try your luck with one of those online SMS services or get a burner because giving your real number would not be very smart.

Most secure with video calling? iMessage and Facetime.
Most practical and mainstream for everybody? WhatsApp

Thanks @Autsfun ! That is a great breakdown and really helpful. It looks like Wickr may be the best if one does not wish to give a phone number.

For any app that requires a number. You can always get a number made up and use that.

I am no expert but although I have a Facebook account I rarely use it. I am not smart enough to figure out a fake number and I never video chat etc. I was just surfing and saw October of 2019 WhatsApp was suing a Israeli firm for hacking activities for purposes of surveillance. Granted for every advancement there’s someone out there figuring out to beat it.

Wire - end to end encryption. Have been using it for a while now and its a pretty good place. It has all forms of communication txt, phone, and video. And have had no issues with it. You should check it out

Three year necro for a topic that's been beaten to death with 100 threads.

Impressive.
