I’m scared he’s going to bite my clit.

I've been through this before and it was painful and it's more recurrent when there's a variation in partners, not just on the clit, on the lips too. When I still don't know the behavior well, I use my fingers to have a certain protection. When the dog is very "gluttonous", I do not allow it to advance until the state of excitement subsides.
 
I imagine the “grooming” behavior is just the dog tasting how close the blood is to the surface of the clit/lips, and thinking he’s going to remove a parasite from his packmate.
