Dog doesn't show his penis?

Hey everyone, I've finally tried having sex with my dog (he's around nine now) and while he's very enthusiastic (he immediately jumps onto me and begins humping whenever I present) he doesn't show his penis at all despite doing so last night (by trying to hump a pillow multiple times), any ideas why that is?

I've read that before but my dog doesn't react to any jerking of the sheath the way it's described there and as far as I know he isn't castrated (as he still has his balls and his sex drive)
