Almost fatal vet misdiagnosis.

So, little bit of a rant, this morning my missus was extremely unwell, lethargic, wouldn't move a paw, not eating and shaking and shivering to the point where it looked as though she was having a seizure.

Took her to my local vet, after not even a 5 minute examination I was told she had pyo and had 24hrs left to live if they didn't operate and remove her uterus. This asshole vet jumped to that conclusion purely because she was intact and was pushing me to let them do it, brought me the forms and everything to sign her over to them. I was considering doing it because I didn't know any better and just wanted her to be ok. Luckily though I had a last minute thought to get a second opinion, drove an hour away to another vet, where they quickly discovered via ultrasound that she has a stomach infection. She's been on a drip and given antibiotics and is already looking and feeling better.

How THE F*CK do you mess up that badly? What if I had given them the go-ahead to operate? Little asshole who misdiagnosed her was probably 20 or 21. To think I paid that little runt for a consultation. Probably does paperwork with crayons. It's not possible he's qualified, right?? Surely you need a license or something to operate as a vet. Someone that useless shouldn't be allowed to put anyone else's animals in danger.

You may have saved her life, and you should be proud of yourself. My late collie partner was rashly and incorrectly diagnosed with leptospirosis, simply because we live in a rural area and he hadn’t had his lepto vaccine for a year and a half.

Tragically, it turned out that he had leukemia, but he could have been spared an extra two weeks of discomfort during his last months if the young veterinarian hadn’t jumped to conclusions simply because my boy was slightly past due for one of his vaccines. I respect the hell out of good vets, but there aren’t many malpractice consequences for inexperienced vets to worry about if they make a poor diagnosis, so I’m afraid they sometimes rush to a conclusion without taking it as seriously as they should.

Thanks everyone, I'm not usually one to bitch and moan but I'm going to take this to social media, leave a Google review and everything to try warn others before that nitwit has the opportunity to ruin any other lives. Their Google reviews are shocking, they're notoriously useless.

Holy shit, unacceptable

Sadly now days you need to do a lot of study to be nearly vet aid qualification as society has been degrading as to quality of knowledge, being educated doesn't make you knowledgeable is a think that is no longer taught. It is all flow charts now days.

it is that skill in diagnosing, he recognize infection and jumped to the easy assumption, instead of looking.

Glad she made it and you got it in time.
Yea, thanks. I was beside myself, she was on her death bed. Still angry about it but also just glad she's getting better.

In an older thread, a vet wanted to rip out the uterus of a dog under similar circumstances. At least some of them have fully bought into the spay and neuter philosophy, and will not hesitate to rip them out with little provocation.

Funny enough. Even doctors for humans can get it fatal enough. Trust me I know. I had first hand experience with that because I lost an aunt to over seen browl cancer, which was seen too late to be any good

One of my girls had some odd auto immune issue attacking her red blood cells, but given she was a bed potato it went well hidden with no real out ward signs, till I made her come for a walk with the pack and noticed it, basically caught it where H were counting.
That's terrible, also glad you caught it.
Never take life for granted as they say. Glad you got it in time as well!
Definitely, really made me realise what's important to me and how I took just basic things for granted. First (and hopefully last) time she will ever have to be away from home.

Wow, he diagnosed her with pyo without the number one symptom of pyo being present? I hope you're switching vets!
You bet I am. My new vet is almost an hour away, they have been amazing. Unbelievable that incompetent morons like that are allowed to practice.
That was blatant malpractice and diagnosing a pet so that he can reap in the money should be grounds for immediate revocation of his license
Shocking, I argued and told him she has no discharge or abdominal swelling or anything. Anyways, tackling it slowly. Plenty people have had similar experiences with that same vet so their days are numbered. Hopefully.

I could go on about how fucking stupid people are but I'm sure you already know that... well, I'm glad in the end everything was ok.

Glad she is OK and good for you taking charge of the situation!

I have an opposite story of a missed pyo from the ER vet, sent home with antibiotics for an unspecific infection and "to monitor" , well the next day I knew my girl was bad took her to a different animal ER and it was emergency pyo surgery.

This has happened to me before old. He didn't do any tests, just because of the convulsive posture and her intact, he immediately said PYO and wanted to neuter her. I didn't let him, because the dog didn't show any pyo symptoms. Even the vet was outraged. I left him without paying. Fuck off. I won't give him money for that shit. I also wrote about it in Google and Facebook reviews. Dick.
There are vets who maniac in neutering. Diagnosis of a pyo is done by at least an ultrasono scan and, if there is discharge, its color and consistency. This is not 1 minute.

Yea, useless. Once she was better I went back into that first vet and came down on them like a ton of bricks. Told them as long as that little prick works there I won't step one foot inside there.
