Adopting Intact Dogs

So, is this a thing? im sure it is, its just that almost every shelter / online listing seems to be a "fixed" dog. I'm somewhat morally opposed to buying a dog from a breeder, and chances are those are also fixed. Is the only recourse to adopt a very young puppy before its been surgically altered? Or to know someone with a puppy they are adopting out "unofficially?" How have others acquired intact dogs? (im somewhat new to all this)

I work with a lot of rescue groups, if it's a private group that you know well and not SPCA or something then it's possible to ensure them that keeping them intact is for their best health and that you're responsible enough for it not to be an issue. My current girl was a rescue, got her only at a few weeks old. It's difficult, but possible. But buying from a registered breeder is the easier route, it's a personal choice.

There is a simple reason for this, because many dogs will breed in confinement or go crazy from the smell of heat, so almost all shelters neuter. In many countries this is a mandatory requirement when a dog is admitted to a shelter.

Breeder or backyard breeder or online ads, "craigslist", Facebook groups where you can buy from the owner.
Most breeders do not neuter. However, be aware that even if you buy a puppy from breeder, they may make it mandatory in the contract.

Curious question, Why you dont want to take from a breeder?
Well, there are already way too many dogs out there without homes to the point they often get put down or stuck in foster care. So it seems completely insane to me that people would go out to breed them for cash, exacerbating the problem. Breeders are also usually scumbags, who force animals into sex and pregnancy, and contribute to the genetic degradation of breeds by ignoring best practices and legality. (they LOVE to force incestuous mating) Typically bred dogs have horrible health problems even if there isn't anything inherently wrong with a particular breed, There's also the selfish reason of pure cost.

i think they also do it just for legality's sake and because its considered best practice. in my jurisdiction im pretty sure neutering is a legal requirement, but I have to double check that. I'm not TOO concerned about getting caught with an unfixed dog as a private citizen though. Sadly, neutering is often considered the most ethical option in most circles, which makes some sense if you're not a zoophile and are concerned with the overpopulation of animals. that being said, even non-zoophile circles have recently been considering the possible negative impacts of neutering. American Kennel Club has an article on it i believe.

I dont have the same experience with breeder.
In France its very regulated, Breeder have to be registered and each dog come with a book of origins, its an official document where you can see the familly tree of your dog up to ten generation, and the dogs are tested to see if they carry the genetic probleme specific to their breed.
So you can't have all the problem you are saying.
As for the dogs in shelters, I might be selfish, but I dont see why its your responsability to clean the mess of other stupid people.
Following your logic, I should not have my own kids but adopt ones from other country.

Im an American. American breeders are careless and make unhealthy dogs. Regardless of whether it should be my responsibility or not, I can still make a more ethical choice of where I get a dog. Just as i can choose to not eat meat. It doesn't change the fact that dogs are getting put down because they cant find a home. Personally i would rather home a dog who needs it than support an unethical breeder. Its just my personal choice of who i want to support.

As for your last point, dogs are not people. So, I'm not sure how that's relevant at all. Adoption of humans is an industry rife with problems of its own in the US and ideally should exist to find homes for children, not children for parents. And the "other country" thing is even less relevant, especially because international adoption is usually straight up human trafficking and cultural genocide.

Just seem like your view of breeders is clouded, I have a hard time believing there is not a single ethical breeder in the us. Why assume they are all bad? I guess there is lot of bad ones, just seem a bit extrem to condamn them all.
But its your opinion.

I'm sure there are some breeders who are relatively ethical, but even if they were, it doesn't change the fact that the existence of the profession is worsening an already urgent and widespread need of adoption in the US.

I mean, if its the only way to acquire an intact dog then I guess id still buy from a breeder but like. It goes against my personal values so I would simply rather not.

The AKC has even backed off, the whole all dogs should be neutered. They are against having a blanket law saying that you are required to do so if you adopt from a shelter. They believe it should be left up to the owner. In the past the belief was that it helped with aggression and it helped prevent different cancers. Now they believe it has very little effect on aggression if any at all. Plus now they believe it actually increases the chances of several different cancers.

I have always had great luck with personal ad kind of places like Craigslist, Facebook, even got my first via an ad in a newspaper lol These were adults as well.
Just my ¢2

There's literally always someone giving puppies away everywhere I drive. I've had to stop myself 20+ times otherwise I'd have 100 dogs by now.

I mean they are all mutts. Or half breeds but adorable none the less.

I'd rather raise one like that then roll the dice on a rehome adult dog from a stranger.

Breeds don't matter to me. They all just want to find their pack. If I had more room I'd have more dogs. Fixed or not . Dogs complete me . Sometimes I just go sleep next to them on the floor because I know they had a bad dream.

If I'm sick they crowd around and crawl next to me to warm me up. It always ok if the dog has you around to be close to. They are pack animals and sometimes more dogs is good for the pack. :)
