before air conditioning, a lot of people were nuts

Before I bought AC my home was literal hell and my dog slept in the bath tub.

Not sure if there IS a point to most of this. prior to about 1970, many businesses were NOT airconditioned. Bars were, Theaters were...Police cars in New York City had dashboard fans. Taxis often had them as well. Passenger cars had Wing windows that brought moving air into a vehicle. Heat in summer was always an issue. Staying cool was a major goal for most of us.

Penguins pic is standard....from window sign to banner.
The lower one is a St Louis Theater, probably new made but not off the mark for 1960.

Had a big elm tree in front of the house when I was a kid. When the city took it out the temp in my bedroom went up 20 degrees. I don't know if it was personal or not, but my folks waited until I moved out to get air conditioning.

Sounds right....In Cities like Baltimore they started cutting the trees down on Broadway, The Alameda, and North Avenue about 1960 when the MTAs realized the newer busses couldnt make the corners. The Summer temps rose 10-15 degrees on average.

It's nuts to install air conditioners over one another, as it often happens with high-rise buildings. The devices at the bottom blow out hot air which the devices above suck in so that they need more and more energy the further up they are to still have an effect ...

Except that in the intervening eight to ten feet between, and as you rise, there is a breeze that tends to blow any rising heat out of line with ac units above. And in most modern construction, the AC is provided by a central roof mounted or basement mounted unit with a dryer system to pull moisture down to optimum for the area. As it happens, the condensed water is a.
Cockroach heaven in basement installs, but it's workable if you know how

I remember how good it was to get to go to the movies as a kid, because we could spend a Saturday afternoon in the air conditioned theater. Growing up in a hot, humid, southern state, air conditioning was a blessing. We didn't get an air conditioner for our house until I was 9 or 10 and when we did it changed how we kids spent our summer days.

I live in the Country in Eastern PA. Trees and a hill behind me shade the house. Snow in the winters lasts weeks compared to the field across the street. Never had air conditioning. Open windows and a $20 fan are all I need when the temp gets above 90. Same with my cars. All have air. Never use it
